Yohocube: Reinventing Cardboard Construction Sets

Revolutionizing Playtime with Innovative, Eco-friendly Design

Yohocube's cardboard construction set is not just a toy, but an innovative approach to sustainable design and education. This unique creation is the brainchild of Elena Chuykova, a designer with over a decade of experience in creating design paper products. The Yohocube set is a testament to her commitment to eco-friendly design and her passion for creating engaging, educational toys.

Chuykova's inspiration for Yohocube came from her desire to overcome the limitations of traditional cardboard toys. She wanted to create a toy that was not only portable and durable but also offered children a creative outlet. After a year of research, she finally crafted the Yohocube, a construction set that provides enough unity and strength to be used as a normal toy.

What sets Yohocube apart from other toys is its unique design properties. It is an educational toy for kids aged 6-12 years and creative adults, consisting of cubes and prisms connected with folding fasteners. This design allows the cardboard construction details to be securely connected without glue, providing the indispensable unity of shape so that the model can be carried and used as a regular toy. Some models are even strong enough to endure the weight of up to 40 kg and can serve as toy furniture.

The Yohocube set is made from 3-layer cellulose cardboard, cut using special cutting stamps. The production and sales of the product started in September 2015. The flat cube measures 290 x 360 x 1.5 mm, and when folded, it measures 80 x 80 x 80 mm. The prism, when flat, measures 195 x 320 x 1.5 mm and when folded, it measures 115 x 55 x 80 mm.

The Yohocube set is not just a toy, but a tool for developing motor skills and educating 3D design. The kits contain different numbers of details to construct various models and are divided by levels based on difficulty. This makes it a versatile toy that can cater to different age groups and skill levels.

The Yohocube project started in December 2014 in Russia, and by March 2015, the team had applied for a Russian Patent. By 2016, they had applied for an International patent. The product is now being offered to a number of toy and creative shops, including big Russian shop chains.

Yohocube's design is a testament to Chuykova's commitment to creating a toy that is both fun and creative. The main challenge was to find a balance between different limitations. The elements needed to be small enough to be suitable for a child's hand, strong enough to withstand play, and big enough for a cutting machine to mass-produce. This balance was successfully achieved, resulting in a toy that is not only fun but also educational and eco-friendly.

The Yohocube cardboard construction kit is an educational toy for kids 6-12 years old and creative adults. Basic elements are cubes and prisms connected with folding fastener. This connection method is unique. International patent application submitted. This connection method differs Yohocube from all other construction kits. Its cardboard details can be securely connected without glue providing the indispensable unity of shape so that the model can be used as a usual toy (tossed, thrown, etc). Some models are strong enough to endure light weight of up to 40 kg and serve as toy furniture.

Yohocube's innovative design has not gone unnoticed. It was awarded Silver in A' Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
